History of a Ramone Jacket - Ramoneska
A little bit about this how the jacket came into being.
The beginning of this story was in 1928 when an american man Irving Schott designed first leather jacket with a slant zip and named it 'Perfecto' - just like his favourite ciagar. He did it special for the motorcyclists enviroment. The jacket was made from a horse leather, had a slant pocket at the bottom, pocket on a lapel and bottoms of sleeves zipped up with a zip. The characteristic element of it was a special zip which protected motorcyclist from the wind while he was riding on a motorbike.
At the end of fourties, Schott designed new model 613, commonly known as a 'One Star' (it takes name from one star on each side of a jacker). After few years new model 618 was made. 618 was the same as 613 but it didn't have any stars.
Since fifties the jacket had been reaching icon status, partly because popular actors were wearing them.
First example is Marlon Brando, who played John Strabler - the leader of a motorcyclist gang 'Hell Angels' in film 'The Wild One'. He was wearing model 618 with stars (necessary for film). It was first film about motorcyclists who were breaking the law and it it the biggest reason why Ramone Jacket had beacame later a synonim of a negative character. As a curiosity we can add that wearing it was prohibited in many american schools.
Other examples are: T-Birds group in film “Grease” (1978), where John Travolta played main role; Henry Winkler as a 'Fronzie' in TV serial 'Happy Days' and of course Mel Gibson as a Mad Max (trilogy from 1979, 1981, 1985). Black studded jacket was also characteristic for Michael Pare from 'Eddie and the Cruisers'(1983) and for cyborg T800 in 'Terminator'(1984).
At the end of fifties and beginning of sixties, Ramone Jacket was popularized among rockers, rebels and other truoble-makers.
Also Polish actors were promoting jacket in films like 'Czterej pancerni i pies'.
In mass culture different types of this motocycle jacket are preserved as the Ramone Jacket (Ramoneska) – thanks to band called Ramones, who used it to create scene image. Other musiscians who wore it was Sid Vicious from 'Sex Pistols', 'Black Sabbath', japanese grunge-punk band 'Guitar Wolf' and David Gahan from 'Depeche Mode'. Also polish artists like Skiba or Michał Wi¶niewski are fans of Ramone Jacket.
There is a great difference betwen jacket which is used to ride on a motorbike and that one to wear as an everyday clothing. First is much more heavier, made from thick leather, sometimes with some armoured elements.
Ramone Jacket is stylized on many other ways, its different versions are connected with subcultures: rockers, motorcyclists, punk-rockers, metal fans etc. Nowadays we don't have to be one of them to wear that imposing jacket. Not only men wear them just beacuse there are more and more jackets designed special for women.
Ramone Jacket is definitely timeless clothing which probably will be the symbol of rebelion towards to 'polite' social standards which don't leave any place for individualism.
